Frequently Asked Questions

Q, WHAT IS VINIYOGA?

Viniyoga is a personalized and adaptive approach to yoga that tailors practices to individual needs. Key principles include:

  • Individualized Practice: Customizing yoga to suit each person's body, abilities, and goals.

  • Function over Form: Emphasizing the benefits of postures rather than achieving a specific look.

  • Breath and Movement Integration: Synchronizing breath with movement for mindfulness and safety.

  • Sequencing: Arranging postures in a specific order to maximize effectiveness and safety.

  • Adaptability: Modifying practices according to life stage, health status, and goals.

Developed by T.K.V. Desikachar, based on the teachings of his father T. Krishnamacharya, Viniyoga ensures that yoga practices are tailored to benefit each individual.

Q, WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN MY FIRST CLASS?

In your first Viniyoga class, you can expect a supportive and non-competitive environment where the practice is adapted to meet your personal needs.

We start with simple, accessible postures and movements that are easy to follow. There will be an emphasis on coordinating breath with each movement to enhance mindfulness and the effectiveness of each posture. Modifications and adjustments will be provided to suit your unique body and any specific conditions you may have.

Q, WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED FOR CLASS?

You'll need a yoga mat. Optional props like blocks or straps may be suggested but alternatives will be provided.

Q, WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Wear anything that feels comfortable and allows you to have a full range of movement. You will find me in leggings or thin jogging bottoms. Also don’t forget to bring an extra layer or blanket for the beginning and end of the class. Finally, we practice yoga in bare feet so please take off your trainers or socks.
